Installed automatically, in the background

Section titled “Installed automatically, in the background”
  • Ubuntu security updates and stable updates.
  • The COSMIC desktop, LibreWolf, Proton VPN, Mullvad VPN and Claude Code — from their makers’ repositories.

Updates never restart the computer for you; kernel updates wait for your next restart. Configuration files you changed are kept, and your home folder is never touched. Snap is blocked from coming back.

A one-off catch-up installs whatever was published since the ISO was built. It runs on mains power, or with at least 50 % battery, and never delays the desktop. If you’re offline it simply tries again at the next boot.

Feature updates outside those repositories wait for you:

Terminal window
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

That covers Ubuntu backports, VSCodium and the GitHub CLI. Flatpak apps update through the Store.
